Dr Michael Rose

BSc, MD, FRCP
Consultant Neurologist

I was a consultant in neurology at King's College Hospital and at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Woolwich from 1996 to 2019.  I now work part time for the NHS doing clinics at the Whittington Hospital.

During the COVID pandemic I was an acting medical examiner and a COVID vaccinator.

I did my neurology training at Atkinson Morley's Hospital, the National Hospitals for Neurology, Queen Square, St Bartholomew's Hospital and the Royal London Hospital. I was a Medical Research Council research fellow investigating mitochondrial muscle disease. I spent a year in Rochester, New York gaining further specialist training in muscle disease.

At Queen Elizabeth Hospital I ran several general neurology clinics seeing all neurology cases including headaches, strokes, dizziness, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. I established a successful First Seizure clinic at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

I helped to establish a nationally respected regional muscle disease clinic service at King's College Hospital where I saw patients with both suspected and proven muscle disease, and myasthenia gravis.

I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) and I was an elected member of the RCP Council that meets 6 times a year to develop RCP policy in relation to professional and clinical matters. This council considers and acts on current issues affecting professional practice and standards for the benefit of patients. I demitted from the Council after my three year term ended in 2018.

I was active in neurology training as an educational supervisor at King's College Hospital. I am a regular examiner for post-graduate medical trainees and was on the boards of several RCP post-graduate examination committees.

I was an active researcher in muscle disease with a particular interest in clinical trials and quality of life issues. With colleagues I helped to produce the first muscle disease specific quality of life measure called INQoL which has been translated into many languages and remains in research and clinical use.

I was a founder member and a co-editor of the Neuromuscular Diseases Cochrane Review Group.

I was an active partner in the TREAT-NMD network and a member of the European Neuromuscular Centre research committee. I was a founder member of the Muscle Study Group based in the USA.

I have published over 100 papers, as well as book chapters, and books on neurology and muscle disease.
